1946 - 1951 Cornwallis
In the early post-war years there was very little road traffic, especially at weekends. For boarders, Sunday afternoons were usually free time between lunch and tea, allowing the possibility of cycle rides to explore the Kent countryside around Cranbrook.

Some boarders from London and beyond would arrive at Cannon Street station with their bikes to catch the train to Paddock Wood and then change onto the Hawkhurst branch line, closed in 1961. Alighting at Cranbrook station we would collect our bikes, make our way to the top of the hill and then go swooping down High Street until we reached the sharp bend and the shops along Stone Street.

It was an exhilarating way to arrive back at school for the beginning of a new term!
