CRANBOOK LYNXES CRICKET - 2017

The celebration of the Club’s 70 th Anniversary involved a reinstatement of the game against the Old Suttonians, a full fixture list, a dinner and raffle – all of which were successful and thoroughly enjoyed by a good number of enthusiastic Old Cranbrookians and guest players. In fact, the week was attended by the highest number of players seen in the past 20 years. The weather was brilliant and Steven Hooper prepared wickets and outfield of great quality. The refurbishment work being carried out on the pavilion was slightly disruptive but we look forward to enjoying improved facilities in 2018.

On July 7 th the Lynxes repeated last year’s win against the School (thus retaining the John Wybourn Cup). Batting first, the OC team, which had been raised by Owen Dearn and Joe Schindler, scored 283 off 40 overs. Toby Russell-Vick made 83 and he was well supported by the evergreen Gary Marshall (57) and Finn Hulbert (73 not out). With the new ball Finn was then too good for a School side which had some key players missing. He took 4 wickets for 19 while Alfie Lloyd-Dyke picked up 3 wickets later in the School innings, which totalled 142.

On Sunday, July 9 th, after a BBQ lunch had been enjoyed by the teams and some former players from both sides, the Old Suttonians batted first. Managing only 127 runs from 25 overs they lost wickets to good bowling from James Thomson, Alfie Lloyd-Dyke and Owen Dearn. A Lynxes win seemed to be a straightforward proposition especially as the first wicket pair of Nick Manser and Miles Richards put on 53 runs in the first 14 overs. A spectacular collapse then ensued with 8 successive batsmen failing to reach double figures. Sadly, with 5 overs still remaining the Lynxes were bowled out for 118.

Several Lynxes enjoyed the OCA Golf Day on the Monday of the week and cricket resumed on July 11 th with the match against the Bully Boys, most of whose players were OCs. Freddie Hulbert (96) made more than half of our total as the Lynxes were bowled out in just over 41 overs. The Bully Boys replied aggressively with Alfie Lloyd-Dyke (62) and Joe Banks (49 not out) in good form as they needed only 32 overs to win by 6 wickets.

The most important feature of the match was the appearance of Izzy Cloke a current student at the School who plays for Kent Ladies and is a member of the England Development squad. Out rather unluckily to an excellent legside stumping by Sam Stibbs, Izzy fielded very effectively and bowled 6 well controlled overs, taking 1 wicket for 25.

The following day the Lynxes lost to The Fleet Street Exiles. Colin Barrett was dismissed just short of a half century in the Lynxes innings (203 runs off 45 overs) in which James Barron was top scorer with 72 not out. Guy Schindler, Reuben Collingwood and Finn Hulbert took 2 wickets each as the FSE won by 4 wickets.

The Thursday of the week saw a new fixture as Nick Manser brought The Wolverines to Bigside. The Lynxes produced a record score off 45 overs – 369 for 8 wickets. James Barron scored his first century for the Club (103 not out) and Finn Hulbert (97) and Guy Schindler (78) also “cashed in” on the relatively weak bowling. Freddie Hulbert, Simon Anthonisz and Owen Dearn then bowled out the opposition for 173 in 30 overs.

Our last opponents were also newcomers as Matt Hall (a former Lynx) brought a team from Hampshire. Lynxes again batted first scoring 177 from the allotted 45 overs with four batsmen getting 20 runs or more while extras also contributed generously to the total. Clayton Pohio, Dave Lewis and Owen Dearn (again) shared the wickets as Matt Hall’s XI mustered only 155 in reply.

On Saturday the 15 th Jez Lawson’s team took on Alex Hodgkins’ team in a T20 match extended to 25 overs each with 13 a side. There ensued a great afternoon of fun but competitive cricket. Jez’s team batted first and made 136 off 25 overs, largely due to 50 not out from Colin Barrett and an enterprising 20 by Rob Hillier. The top order was taken care of by Clayton Pohio who finished with 5 wkts for 7 runs. Alex’s team won the match in the penultimate over, Freddie Skarbek 50 not out and then Ned Powell and Ben Steel hit the winning runs.

The usual excellent BBQ lunches were supplied by Graeme Edmonds and his staff throughout the week while Gary Marshall (Lynxes President) ensured that all players and visitors were able to enjoy drinks from the pavilion during and after the games.

James Barron will have his name on the Andrew Bond Cup for batting and Owen Dearn well deserved his award of the David Winterbottom Bowling Cup.
The 70 th Anniversary Dinner was held at the School with more than 80 Lynxes, their partners and other OCs enjoying a very successful evening, which also featured visual presentations and a draw for the raffle. Desmond High proposed a toast to the Lynxes and Gary Marshall responded on behalf of the Club.

Tuesday July 11 th - Lynxes v Bully Boys
Match Manager: Gary Marshall

This was a tough fought match that was won by the Bully Boys because of their excellent catching whereas the Lynxes dropped far too many.

The Lynxes batted first and Hugo Youngman and Freddie Hulbert
provided an excellent start until Hugo was out for 13. Freddie
continued to near the end of the innings accumulating a very good 96.

Joe Schindler took two excellent slip catches to prevent the talented
James Harfoot and Ben Tragett adding vital runs and Finn Hulbert was
dismissed cheaply leaving the Lynxes at 187.

The Lynxes had a good bowling attack with Finn and Freddie Hulbert
ably supported by Ben Tragett and Izzy Cloke. The Bully Boys
attacked the bowling through Alfie Lloyd-Dyke who made 62 before
becoming the first wicket for debutante Izzy Cloke. Despite good
bowling the Bully Boys were able to ease to victory as Joe Banks
batted sensibly for 49 not out. If the catches had been taken and fewer
extras conceded this would have been a lot closer.
