CRANBROOK LYNXES CRICKET – JULY 2014

On July 2 nd the School XI was too strong for the OC team which had been raised by Joe Schindler. In a 40 over match Sam Greehy scored 75 not out in the School’s total of 238 for 7 and then Finn Hulbert took 3 wickets as the school bowled out the Lynxes for 154 runs. In spite of some early drizzle on the following Sunday morning “The Lynxes Lash” (a knock-out competition for six teams playing 6-a-side games on two pitches) was much enjoyed with a young OC side (again led by Joe Schindler) coming through to win the trophy. This special day for OCs and their families will be further developed next year.

Although the remaining matches were threatened by showery and windy weather they were all completed. Each day Bigside was prepared to perfection by Steven Hooper and excellent BBQ lunches were supplied by Graeme Edmonds and his staff. Gary Marshall (Lynxes Chairman), who unfortunately was unable to play this year, ensured that all players and visitors were able to enjoy drinks from the pavilion during and after the games.

Three matches were played (all with limited overs format) with two being won. In the game against the Bully Boys the Lynxes chased down a score of 235 for a 5 wicket victory in the very last over. The Fleet Street Exiles were too good for us in both batting and bowling as our 177 runs did not match their big total of 265. In the last match Old Cranbrookian Nick Pink (C 1995) led his team of “Pink Panthers” against the Lynxes, who scored 205 in their allotted overs and then bowled out the opposition for 130 in only 30 overs. Current student, Wilf Andrews, scored a fine 69 for us, thereby winning the Andrew Bond Cup for batting. Having played in all three games, Jack Marshall (son of Gary) deserved his award of the David Winterbottom Bowling Cup.

Tom Allen (W 1986), Wilf Andrews (School), Simon Anthonisz (R 1970), James Barron (CR 1991), Toto Berger (R 2011), Luca Bertoli-Mitchell (W 2012), Max O’Collins (W 2009), Patrick Coyne (2007), Doug Gordon (SL 2011), Jake Hornsby (R 2010), Finn Hulbert (School), Alfie Lloyd-Dyke (SL 2013), Nick Manser (R 2011), Paul Morkel (A 2004), Peter Newman (A 1973), Max O’Collins (W 2009), Ned Powell (W 2012), Ollie Powell (W 2012), Guy Schindler (School), Joe Schindler (A 2012), Matt Simpson (School), Sam Stibbs (A 2012), Will Tomalin (A 2011) Ben Tragett (CS 1993) played in the 11 a side matches.

Many other OC’s of varying vintages came to play in the “Lynxes Lash” and several other “friends of Cranbrook” helped to make up the other teams. We hope all those who supported the Club this summer will return next year to enjoy friendly but competitive cricket in the second week of July.

Any cricketing OCs, parents and family friends are always very welcome and anybody wishing to play should contact Gary Marshall (E mail: gmsquash@live.co.uk Mobile: 07866 430289).

Jeremy Barham

Appointment of new President and Chairman

The Club has had three Presidents, Frank Evans (from our foundation in 1947 to 1978), Peter West (1979-1997) and Jeremy Barham (C 1960).

Nick Pink (C 1995) has agreed to be the Club's Chairman and together they will liaise with the other Officers and members of the Committee to review how the Club should progress in the future.

Lynxes lost by 84 runs

Tuesday July 8 th - Lynxes v Bully Boys
Match Manager: Paul Morkel

Upon winning the toss, the visiting Bully Boys decided to bat first on a green track in a game reduced to 45 overs per side. A solid opening partnership was ended with some hostile bowling from Finn Hulbert and solid hands from Ben Tragett in the outfield. Jack Marshall managed to bowl some unplayable turning medium pace with some aid from Big Side and accounted for two more of the visiting batsmen. Overseas guest Josh Beaumont spun his was to 3-35, including the wicket of Bully Boys skipper and ex-Lynxes player Joe Schindler for 34. Some lower order hitting kept the scoreboard ticking with Simon Anthonisz helping to curb the flow of runs with 2-32. A competitive total of 235-9 was posted on a difficult track, but an outfield that offered value to batsmen.

The Bully Boys then took to the field with a short amount of play scheduled before the famous Big Side BBQ. Tom Allen was removed early on, but Nick Manser played an aggressive innings to be not out at the break, right on track with the required run rate. Resuming where he left off, Manser flayed the bowling around, reaching a well-made 50 and deciding that was his lot, chipping one up to relax in the pavilion. A second overseas guest Ross Elliot hit a solid 42 with some rain breaking up play on two occasions. He received support from Matt Simpson (18) and then Finn Hulbert (40), who decided to make a point, reverse sweeping his brother for a couple of boundaries. Beaumont (39*) was joined by skipper Paul Morkel (22*) to see home a well-paced chase, the Lynxes reaching their target with five balls to spare in an exciting and high quality game.
